Walther Grotenhuis is a Dutch film director who has been active in the film industry since the early 1990s. He is best known for his work on the critically acclaimed films The Vanishing (1988) and The Northerners (1992).
Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 1961, Grotenhuis developed a love of film from an early age. His parents, both teachers, exposed him to classic films from around the world and encouraged him to explore different genres and styles. After graduating from the Netherlands Film and Television Academy in Amsterdam, Grotenhuis began his directing career in the late 1980s.
His first feature film, The Vanishing, was released in 1988 and quickly became a critical success. The film follows a man's desperate search for his missing girlfriend and featured a cast of unknown actors. Despite its low budget, the film earned widespread acclaim for its suspenseful story and haunting atmosphere.
In 1992, Grotenhuis directed The Northerners, a drama set in a small Dutch village. The film, which starred Rutger Hauer and Jeroen Krabbé, was a hit in the Netherlands and earned Grotenhuis an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
Grotenhuis has since gone on to direct several more films, including the romantic comedy Take Me Out (1996), the crime drama The Fourth Man (1999), and the romantic drama The Promise (2004). He has also directed episodes of the Dutch television series Baantjer and the Dutch-American series The Bridge.
