Teboho Edkins is a South African director and artist born in Johannesburg in 1976. He is best known for his feature films and documentaries, which explore themes of displacement, identity, and the effects of globalization.
Edkins studied film and video at the University of Cape Town in South Africa before moving to London, where he has lived and worked since 2002. He has directed two feature films, Destiny (2008) and The Gap (2013), both of which earned international acclaim. Destiny was nominated for a Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival, while The Gap was awarded Best Feature at the Goteborg International Film Festival.
In addition to his feature films, Edkins has made several documentaries, including Ma Ya (2005), which chronicles the lives of three teenage girls in Botswana living in poverty; and A Love Story (2015), which follows a young woman’s search for her identity after being orphaned in South Africa.
Edkins’s work has been featured in numerous film festivals and exhibitions around the world, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Berlinale, the Sundance Film Festival, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has also been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Hubert Bals Fund Prize and the Grand Prix at the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam.
In addition to his film work, Edkins is an avid photographer and has published several books of photography. His photographs explore themes of displacement, identity, and the effects of globalization, much like his films.
