Tamuna Karumidze is an award-winning Georgian-born filmmaker and director. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia in 1983, she began her creative career early, studying media and communication at the University of Tbilisi. After graduating in 2005, Karumidze quickly established herself as a prolific force in the Georgian film industry.
Karumidze’s first feature-length documentary, “Life, Death, and Fear” (2008), was an official selection at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam, and won the Grand Prix at the Festival for Documentary and Short Film in Leipzig. The film follows the story of a young woman in Tbilisi struggling with poverty and the social and political turmoil of post-Soviet Georgia.
In 2012, Karumidze released her first narrative feature, “The Last Day of Summer.” The film won Best Film at the International Short Film Festival in Riga, Latvia, and was selected for official screening at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic.
In 2013, Karumidze released “Women of the North,” a documentary exploring the lives of women living in the mountainous region of Georgia. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning numerous awards, including the Grand Prix at the International Documentary Film Festival in Moscow.
Karumidze’s most recent feature, “The Other Side of the River,” was released in 2014. The film tells the story of a young woman’s struggle to find her place in a rapidly changing Georgia. The film was a hit at film festivals around the world, and won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix at the International Documentary Film Festival in Berlin.
Karumidze’s work has been recognized internationally, with numerous awards and accolades. She is a frequent guest lecturer at film festivals and universities. She currently lives in Tbilisi, Georgia, where she continues to write and direct feature films, documentaries, and short films. Her work is a testament to her creative vision and commitment to telling stories of social justice.
