Sofía Vaccaro is an Argentinian film director, producer, screenwriter, and actress. Born in Buenos Aires in 1980, she studied film at the Universidad del Cine. After graduating, she began directing short films and music videos. Her first feature-length film, “La Novia” (The Bride), premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 and earned her a nomination for the Palme d’Or.
In 2014, Vaccaro directed “The Wait”, a romantic drama starring Julieta Díaz and Leonardo Sbaraglia. The film was critically acclaimed and won several awards, including the Grand Prize at the Mar del Plata Film Festival. Vaccaro’s next film, “La Soledad” (Solitude), was released in 2016 and was a critical and commercial success. It won the Grand Prize at the Havana Film Festival and was nominated for the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
In 2018, Vaccaro wrote and directed “La Reina de Indias” (The Queen of the Indies), a historical drama about the first Spanish settlement in the Americas. The film was a box office success and earned Vaccaro a Goya Award for Best Director. The same year, she directed the psychological thriller “The Stranger”, starring Alberto Ammann and Martina Gusman.
In 2020, Vaccaro released her latest film, “La Sirena” (The Mermaid), a horror-fantasy starring Gloria Carrá and Federico Luppi. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Vaccaro was nominated for a Goya Award for Best Director.
Vaccaro is currently working on her next film, “La Mariposa” (The Butterfly), which is set to be released in 2021. She has also directed several episodes of the Netflix series “Fantasmas” (Ghosts).
Throughout her career, Vaccaro has been praised for her bold, innovative style, and her films have been lauded for their exploration of themes such as love, loss, and identity. She is one of the most acclaimed and successful Argentinian directors of her generation.
