Roman Shumunov is a Ukrainian director and cinematographer best known for his work in the award winning films The Tribe (2014), The Road (2016), and The Price of Freedom (2018).
Born and raised in the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi, Shumunov developed an interest in film early in life. He studied at the Karpenko-Kary Film Institute in Kiev, where he specialized in cinematography. He then went on to direct his own films, beginning with the short film “A Mute’s Cry” (2011).
In 2014, Shumunov released his first feature-length film, The Tribe, which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. The film follows a deaf-mute student who is forced to join a gang in order to survive. The Tribe was praised for its unique visual style, its powerful performances, and its thought-provoking subject matter.
Shumunov’s next film was The Road (2016), which was also well-received and won several awards. The film follows a young man who is forced to travel across the war-torn Ukraine. The film is a powerful exploration of the human cost of war and the resilience of the human spirit.
In 2018, Shumunov released The Price of Freedom, a documentary about the Ukrainian Revolution. The film was praised for its intimate portrayal of the people’s struggle against oppression.
Shumunov is currently in post-production on his next feature film, The Last Day. The film is a psychological thriller about a woman struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.
