Natalia Cabral is a Dominican filmmaker and director from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She is known for her work on the feature documentary “I Am Maria” (2017), which explores the lives of women in the Dominican Republic’s sugar cane industry and was an official selection of the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
Cabral graduated from the San Antonio de los Baños Film School in Cuba in 2008, where she studied filmmaking and screenwriting. She has directed and produced several documentary films, including “El Silencio de los Fusiles” (2010), which premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and was screened at numerous international film festivals.
In 2016, Cabral wrote and directed the short film “La Visita”, which premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. The film tells the story of a woman’s journey to the Dominican Republic to visit her estranged mother. It was awarded the 2016 Cannes Short Film Prize and was nominated for the 2017 Goya Award for Best Short Film.
In 2017, Cabral wrote and directed her first feature film, “I Am Maria”. The film explores the lives of women in the Dominican Republic’s sugar cane industry, focusing on Maria, a woman who has worked the fields for over twenty years. It premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature Film at the 2017 Guadalajara International Film Festival.
Cabral’s work explores themes of identity, family, and the struggles of life in the Dominican Republic. Through her films, she has shed light on the struggles of women and the difficulties they face in a male-dominated society.
Cabral is currently developing her next feature film, “The Island of the Dolls”. The film is set in the Dominican Republic and tells the story of a young girl who discovers a mysterious island filled with abandoned dolls.
