Karan Singh is a well-known Indian film director, producer and screenwriter. Born in the city of Delhi, India, in 1965, Karan Singh has been making films since the late 1980s.
Karan's journey in the film industry began when he was a teenager. After completing his studies in Delhi, he moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in films. He started his career as an assistant director to renowned filmmakers like Subhash Ghai and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He worked with them for many years and learnt the nuances of filmmaking.
Karan made his directorial debut with the 1988 film ‘Aadmi’ which starred Naseeruddin Shah, Rati Agnihotri and Shabana Azmi in lead roles. The film was a success and was appreciated for its bold subject and unique treatment. It proved to be the launching pad for Karan and soon he was making more films. Karan has also ventured into producing films. He co-produced the hit ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (1995) and ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (2001). He has also written and directed many television shows like ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998), ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (2001) and ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ (2003).
Karan has been awarded the National Film Award for Best Director for his 2001 film ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’. He has also received several other awards including the Filmfare Award for Best Director and the Screen-Videocon Award for Best Director.
