Julia Mariano is an American director and producer best known for her work on television shows such as The Good Place, Jane the Virgin, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. She has also directed music videos for artists such as Christina Aguilera, Taylor Swift, and Avril Lavigne.
Mariano was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in nearby Dorchester. She attended Boston Latin School and went on to study at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she graduated with a degree in film and television.
Mariano began her career in the music industry, directing music videos for a variety of artists. She then moved on to television, directing episodes of shows such as The Good Place, Jane the Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and How I Met Your Mother. She also directed a feature-length documentary called The Lost Boys of the Sudan, which followed a group of young refugees as they tried to make a new life in the United States.
In addition to her work on television, Mariano has directed several short films, including High School Reunion, which won the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival. Mariano is passionate about giving back to her community and has worked with organizations such as the AFI Directing Workshop for Women, the Sundance Institute, and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. She is also an advocate for diversity in the media and recently served as a mentor for the “Women Behind the Camera” program, which provides support and guidance to female directors.
