Julia Grebennikova is a Russian film director, producer and screenwriter. She was born in Moscow in 1973 and graduated from the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in 1996. She began her career as an assistant director before making her directorial debut in 2003 with the feature film “Dreams of a Young Girl”. She has since gone on to direct several award-winning films in Russia, including “The White Room” and “The Dream”.
In 2012, Grebennikova made her international debut with the film “Magnit”, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning the Best First Feature Film award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. She followed up “Magnit” with the critically acclaimed “Why Don’t You Just Die!”, which won the Best Director award at the Moscow International Film Festival in 2019.
In addition to her directing work, Grebennikova is also a prolific producer. She has produced such films as “The Dream”, “The White Room” and “The End of the Tour”. She also serves as the founder and head of the production company “Luch”.
Grebennikova is known for her dark and edgy style of film-making, often exploring themes such as violence, death and the psychological effects of trauma. Her films have received numerous awards and critical acclaim, making her one of the most respected directors in Russia.
Grebennikova is currently working on her next film, “The Kursk”, which is set for release in 2021. She is also working on a feature-length documentary about the Soviet Union and its legacy.
