Jan Stöckel is a Czech-born film director and screenwriter. He was born in Prague in 1965 and grew up in a family of Czech filmmakers. His parents were both scriptwriters, and his grandfather worked as a cinematographer. From an early age, Jan was exposed to the film industry, and it quickly became his passion.
After graduating from Charles University in Prague, Jan moved to the United States to pursue his dream of becoming a film director. He attended the University of Southern California, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts in Film Production. After graduation, he worked as a production assistant on various films, including Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jurassic Park’.
In 2003, Jan made his directorial debut with ‘The Fifth Corner’, a psychological thriller about a group of college students who experience a supernatural event. The film was well received by critics and earned Jan a Czech Film and Television Academy nomination for Best Director.
Since then, Jan has directed several feature films, including the romantic comedy ‘The Wedding Officer’ in 2008 and the action thriller ‘The Chemist’ in 2011. His most recent film is the historical drama ‘The Last Emperor’, which was released in 2016.
Jan is also a successful television director, having directed episodes of ‘The Mentalist’, ‘Nash Bridges’, ‘CSI’ and ‘The OA’. He has also directed several music videos for artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera.
Jan’s films often explore themes of identity, morality and love. He is known for his strong visuals and his ability to create suspenseful and thrilling stories. His films have earned him numerous awards, including a Czech Lion Award for Best Director for ‘The Fifth Corner’ and a Golden Globe nomination for ‘The Last Emperor’.
