Iwan Schumacher is a renowned film director, writer and producer from Switzerland. He is best known for his Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated documentary, "The White Diamond" (2004).
Born in 1982 in Zurich, Schumacher was always interested in film and the arts. As a child, he spent much of his time creating stop-motion animation and short films with his siblings. He studied film and directing at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and graduated with a degree in 2004.
In his early career, Schumacher wrote and directed several short films. His most successful project was “The White Diamond”, a documentary about the life of a Swiss engineer who attempted to build a hot air balloon in order to explore the Amazon jungle. The film was a critical success, and was nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA.
Since then, Schumacher has directed several feature films, including “The White Ribbon” (2009) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014). His most successful project was “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, which grossed over $175 million worldwide and was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning four.
Schumacher is also known for his work in television, having directed episodes of the critically acclaimed series “Black Mirror” (2015-2017) and “Westworld” (2016-2017).
Outside of his work in film and television, Schumacher is also an avid photographer and has had his work exhibited in galleries across Europe. He has also written several books on filmmaking and photography, including “The Art of Directing” (2009) and “The Art of Cinematography” (2011).
