Giulio Tonincelli is an Italian film director and screenwriter. He is best known for his films “The Last Kiss” (2001), “The Best of Youth” (2003), and “Don’t Tell” (2005). He has also worked on television series such as “Romanzo Criminale” (2005-2006) and “Vallanzasca: Gli angeli del male” (2010).
Tonincelli was born in Rome in 1958. He studied at the University of Rome and graduated with a degree in psychology. He then began his career in the film industry, working as an assistant director for several Italian films. In 1992, he made his directorial debut with “Gli occhi dell’amore” (The Eyes of Love). This film was a success and earned him a Nastro d’Argento award for Best New Director.
In 2001, Tonincelli released “The Last Kiss”, which was a commercial and critical success. The film won the Nastro d’Argento Award for Best Film and Tonincelli earned a nomination for the David di Donatello Award for Best Director. In 2003, he released “The Best of Youth”, which was an even bigger success. This film won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and seven David di Donatello Awards.
In 2005, Tonincelli released “Don’t Tell”, which was a critical success but failed to make an impact at the box office. He then moved to television, directing several episodes of the popular Italian series “Romanzo Criminale”. In 2010, he directed “Vallanzasca: Gli angeli del male”, which earned him another David di Donatello Award nomination.
In 2012, Tonincelli released his first feature film in seven years, “Anche libero va bene” (Even Freedom Is Alright). This film was a critical and commercial success and earned Tonincelli his third David di Donatello Award nomination. He then returned to television in 2013, directing the miniseries “I Medici”.
