Giuliana Scicolone, born on 15th November 1934, is an Italian film director, producer, and screenwriter. She was born in Pozzuoli, near Naples, Italy. She is the daughter of Romilda Villani and Riccardo Scicolone, a construction engineer.

She graduated from the University of Rome with a degree in Literature, and began her career as a television scriptwriter. In 1972, she wrote and directed her first film, “La notte della Repubblica,” which was critically acclaimed and won several awards.

In 1977, Scicolone directed the Italian comedy-drama “Il cappotto di Legno.” She followed this up with two more successful comedies, “Il matrimonio di Maria” (1979) and “La vita agra” (1982). She also wrote and produced the 1991 comedy “La casa delle bambole.”

Her most notable work is the 1992 historical drama “La Pazza della Porta Accanto,” which won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. She was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director. The film was praised for its strong performances and its powerful story about a woman’s journey towards freedom.

Scicolone has also directed several television films, including the 1995 drama “Una donna in fuga” and the 1997 comedy “Una famiglia in giallo.” She has also directed the 2003 drama “La storia di una donna,” which was nominated for a Golden Globe.

In addition to her work as a director, Scicolone has worked as a producer for many films, including “Le ragazze della porta accanto” (2001) and “La scuola più bella del mondo” (2006). She has also written several screenplays, including “Gli angeli di Borgo San Pietro” (1984).

Scicolone has received numerous awards throughout her career, including the Italian Golden Globe for Best Director in 1995, the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists Award for Best Director in 1997, and the David di Donatello Award for Best Director in 2003.
