Frida Kempff is a Swedish film director, screenwriter and producer who has gained international recognition for her work in both feature films and television series. Born in Stockholm in 1965, she grew up in a family of filmmakers and artists. She attended the Stockholm Film School, where she was mentored by renowned Swedish film directors Ingmar Bergman and Bo Widerberg. After completing her studies, she began directing short films and documentaries before making her feature film debut in 1993 with the romantic comedy Kärlek och Anarki (Love and Anarchy).
Kempff’s most successful films include the 1996 drama Sökarna (The Seekers) and the 2003 crime thriller Smala Sussie (Thin Sussie). Sökarna won several awards and was nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. In 2019, Kempff directed the television miniseries Flickan som lekte med elden (The Girl Who Played with Fire). The series was a critical and commercial success, helping Kempff become one of the most sought-after directors in Sweden.
Kempff’s work has been praised for its focus on strong female characters and for its inventive visual style. She has been nominated for several Swedish Film Awards, and in 2020 she was honored with the Ingmar Bergman Award for her contributions to the Swedish film industry.
Kempff has since continued to work in television and film, most recently directing the 2020 miniseries Stockholm Requiem. She is currently in post-production on her first English-language feature film, The White Bird, which she wrote and directed.
