BIO

Dee Hibbert-Jones is an award-winning director, animator, and educator. She has been creating social justice-oriented documentary films for over two decades. Her work has been featured in numerous film festivals, galleries, and museums including the Sundance Film Festival, the Whitney Biennial, and the Museum of Modern Art.

Hibbert-Jones was born in Chicago in 1964 and grew up in the Bay Area of California. She studied painting and photography at the San Francisco Art Institute and received her MFA in Film & Video from California Institute of the Arts.

Hibbert-Jones has worked in a variety of media ranging from animation to documentary film. Her distinguished career began in the late 1990s with her animated film “The Cold War”, which received a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. She has since gone on to create a number of award-winning documentaries, including “Last Day of Freedom” (2015), which won the National Emmy Award for Best Documentary and the International Documentary Association Award for Best Short Documentary.

In addition to her work in film, Hibbert-Jones is an active educator. She currently teaches Animation and Documentary Production at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She also leads workshops and lectures across the United States, focusing on documentary filmmaking and social justice.

Hibbert-Jones’ work has been praised for its unique blend of animation and documentary techniques, as well as its thoughtful examination of difficult topics. Her films have been screened at festivals and events around the world, including the Berlin International Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.

Hibbert-Jones’ films are not only entertaining, but also thought-provoking. Through her work, she continues to challenge viewers to think critically about the stories we tell and the history we create.
