Ana Mary Ramos is an award-winning documentary filmmaker from the Dominican Republic. She is best known for her films exploring the themes of identity, gender, and race.
Born in the Dominican Republic in 1986, Ramos grew up in a small village, surrounded by a tight-knit community of family and friends. From an early age, she was exposed to the different cultures of the Dominican Republic and quickly developed an interest in storytelling through film.
Ramos attended the University of the Arts in Santo Domingo where she received her degree in Communications and Film in 2008. After graduating, she began working as a freelance video editor for various television networks. This experience allowed her to hone her film-editing skills and gain insight into the world of documentary filmmaking.
In 2012, Ramos made her directorial debut with her first feature-length documentary, “El Otro Lado”. The film explores the struggles of Dominican immigrants living in the United States and the impact of the Dominican diaspora on the Dominican Republic. The film was an official selection at several film festivals including the Miami International Film Festival and the San Francisco International Film Festival. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival.
In 2015, Ramos released her second feature-length documentary, “La Espera”. The film follows a group of Dominican women who are trying to find their place in the world. The film was selected for the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival and won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Havana International Film Festival.
Since then, Ramos has directed several documentaries and short films. Her films have been screened at film festivals around the world and she has become recognized as a leader in the Latin American documentary film industry.
Ramos is committed to using her films to tell the stories of her people and to inspire others to pursue their own dreams. She is currently working on a new project focusing on the role of women in the Caribbean.
