In the Prenzlauer Berg district of East Berlin, a small private company delivers heating coal under the leadership of a feisty woman who runs the business with humor and understanding.

Her seven male employees respect her, and while they appear tough on the outside, their vulnerabilities are revealed as they share their life stories. Their conversations cover a range of topics, from the building of the Berlin Wall and thoughts of escaping to the West, to personal struggles with child abuse, suicide, prison, and alcoholism.
