In a remote forest in Quebec, a man builds a fragile new life surrounded by his cats. When one disappears, buried memories resurface and unsettle his carefully constructed world.
A solitary life in the forest shaped by cats and memory
Set deep within the forests of Abitibi Témiscamingue in Quebec, These Wild Cats follows Martin, a solitary man who has withdrawn from society to build a self made existence in a remote cabin. Surrounded by spruce trees, discarded machinery and the quiet presence of his cats, he constructs a life shaped by routine, isolation and a fragile sense of control. His relationship with his animals becomes central to his emotional world, offering both companionship and a means of expression.
When Junior, one of his cats, suddenly disappears, Martin’s daily rhythm is disrupted. The loss triggers memories and unresolved emotions tied to his past, gradually revealing the complexity beneath his chosen isolation. Through fragments of daily life and intimate confessions, the documentary film adopts a deeply observational approach, immersing the viewer in both the physical environment and Martin’s inner landscape.
Filmed with a close and participatory method over multiple visits, the film explores themes of mourning, freedom and marginality. It raises questions about the limits of solitude and the human need for connection, while presenting a portrait of a man navigating survival, identity and emotional resilience in a remote and demanding environment.
