Memoirs of Métiers: The Gardener Of The Carpathians - Preserving a rare craft amid nature's challenges
In a world where traditional crafts are fading, Karcsi emerges as the youngest amadou producer. Each year, he spends around 100 days in the wilderness, braving bears and wolves to collect tinder fungus over treacherous terrains. His journeys span more than 10 kilometers, yielding up to 30 kilos of mushrooms per trip. Yet, the greatest threat comes not from the wild but from climate change and deforestation, jeopardizing the very fungi he relies on.
Undeterred, Karcsi passionately transforms this unique material into hats, wallets, and more, even supplying international fashion brands. With hopes of passing on his craft to his son, Ábel, Karcsi's dedication exemplifies the enduring spirit of craftsmanship and the potential of a nearly extinct art form.
