The answer is: THE VOICE. Against a background of powerful alpine vistas and modern city landscapes, "Echoes of home" enters the wondrous sonic world of three exceptional Swiss vocal artists. Their universe of sound extends far beyond what we would describe as singing. In their engagement with local and foreign traditions, the powerful mountain landscape becomes a stage as do the landscapes and sonic backdrops of modern life.
Echoes of home, the language of the Swiss mountains
No matter where in the world they are, the people of the alpine village of Appensell can recognize themselves through their own language: the colors of their voices. It is the "yodeling", an ancient musical tradition of the villages of the Swiss Alps, where the melodies generated by the voice conform a language of solidarity and belonging.
Director Stefan Schwietert makes another of his great documentaries about music, now investigating the origins and current expression of Yodeling in the carreer of three swiss musicians: Erika Stucky, Noldi Alder and Christian Zehnder. To do this, he moves to the Swiss mountains, interviews experts, musicians and their families to give image to the echoes of art and human communication.
