Inside the world of child Muay Thai fighters in rural Thailand

Buffalo Girls follows Stam and Pet, two eight year old girls who work as professional Muay Thai fighters in small villages across rural Thailand. The documentary observes their daily routines as they travel to modest and often improvised arenas where they compete for prize money that helps sustain their families. In these communities, child boxing has become a vibrant circuit where more than thirty thousand girls participate to earn an income, while gamblers and local spectators build an economy around their fights. The film provides a close look at the training spaces, the atmosphere of the underground arenas and the strategies of those who bet on the young fighters. It also reveals the role played by parents and relatives who support the girls, motivated by the hope that their performance will secure essential resources in a region marked by limited opportunities.

Director Todd Kellstein accompanies Stam and Pet with a patient and observant camera. He speaks with families, trainers and referees, as well as with the bettors who influence the rhythm of the circuit. Although Kellstein does not openly question the decisions that expose the girls to harsh conditions such as fighting without mouth guards or helmets, his presence encourages each person to reflect on their own involvement. Through interviews and direct observation, the documentary portrays a controversial practice shaped by poverty, tradition and survival. It offers an intimate view of a world where childhood, sport and necessity coexist, and where fighting becomes both a livelihood and a path toward a better future for two young boxers and their families.
