BIO

Simon Amstell is an English comedian, television presenter, director, and screenwriter. He is best known for his work as the host of the popular television quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks from 2006–2008, as well as for writing and directing the British romantic comedy feature film, Carnage.

Born in 1979 in Gants Hill, Essex, to parents who ran a clothing business, Amstell was raised in a Jewish family. He attended the independent Bancroft's School in Woodford Green and began performing stand-up comedy at the age of 14. He was a finalist in the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year competition in 1998.

In 2003, Amstell became a presenter on the British music channel, Channel 4, appearing on Popworld and the show's spin-off, Popworld TV. He then went on to become the host of the BBC Two music-based quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks in 2006. He was popular with viewers and remained the host until 2008.

In 2010, Amstell wrote and directed his first feature film, Carnage, which was released in the UK in 2011. The film was a romantic comedy, starring him alongside Sheridan Smith and James Corden. It received positive reviews and was a box office success.

In 2012, he wrote and directed his second feature film, Grandma's House, a semi-autobiographical comedy about a comedian's relationship with his grandmother. The film was nominated for a BAFTA award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

Amstell's other television work includes his own shows, Grandma's House and Ben Elton's The Wright Way, as well as appearances on Alan Carr's Chatty Man and the panel show 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

In recent years, Amstell has been focusing more on producing his own work, including his series, Set List (2012–2014) and his stand-up comedy show, Numb (2015). He has also appeared on the popular U.S. television show, Inside Amy Schumer.

Amstell is an outspoken vegan and noted animal rights activist. He has spoken out against the fur trade and campaigned against animal testing.
