Shehrezad Maher is an award-winning director, producer, and screenwriter. She is renowned for her work on projects such as The Good Muslim, Chutney Popcorn, and The Boy Who Stole the Moon.

Early Life

Shehrezad Maher was born in 1980 in London, England. Her parents, both of Pakistani descent, had moved to Britain for educational opportunities. Shehrezad’s father was a doctor, and her mother was a teacher. Growing up in a Muslim household, she had a very devout upbringing. She was raised with strong religious values that would later shape her art.


After high school, Shehrezad studied film and television at the University of Westminster. She then went on to pursue her Master's degree in Film and Television from the London International Film School. After completing her studies, she began working as a producer and director for television, radio, and film projects.


In 2006, Shehrezad wrote and directed her debut feature film, The Good Muslim. The film was a critical success, winning awards at various film festivals. The Good Muslim tells the story of a Pakistani Muslim family in the UK and the struggles they face with their faith and identity. It was a groundbreaking project that helped to open up conversations about the Muslim experience in the West.

Shehrezad continued to explore different themes in her work. In 2009, she wrote and directed Chutney Popcorn, an award-winning romantic comedy about an Indian-American lesbian couple. In 2011, she wrote and directed The Boy Who Stole the Moon, an adaptation of a children’s book. In both of these films, Shehrezad explored themes of identity, culture, and family.


Throughout her career, Shehrezad has been honored with numerous awards and recognition for her work. She has won numerous awards for her films, including the International Film Festival of India Award, the International Film Festival of Kerala Award, and the New York International Film Festival Award. She has also been honored by the British Asian Film Foundation for her contribution to the Asian cinema.

In recent years, Shehrezad has become a leader in the field of filmmaking. She has served as a jury member at several film festivals and has been featured in numerous publications, including The Guardian, The New York Times, and The Independent.
