Sergei Loznitsa is a Ukrainian filmmaker and artist, who is known for his distinctive style of documentary filmmaking and his unique approach to storytelling. Born in 1964 in Belarus, Loznitsa started his career as a scientist, working in the fields of mathematics and cybernetics. He then moved to film, studying at the renowned St. Petersburg State University of Cinema and Television. It was here that he developed his interest in documentary filmmaking and developed his signature style.

In 2001, Loznitsa released his first feature-length documentary, Blockade, which was an intimate portrait of life during the Siege of Leningrad. The film was praised by critics and won numerous awards, including the FIPRESCI Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Since then, Loznitsa has gone on to make a number of acclaimed documentaries, including My Joy (2010), In the Fog (2012), Maidan (2014), A Gentle Creature (2017), and Donbass (2018).
