BIO

Manolo Sarmiento is a Mexican director, screenwriter and producer. He is best known for directing the critically acclaimed feature films, “The Perfect Dictatorship” and “We Are What We Are.”

Manolo was born in Mexico City in 1962. He studied at the Center for Cinematographic Studies of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he developed a keen interest in filmmaking. After graduation, he worked as an assistant director in television production before making his feature film directorial debut in 2000 with “The Perfect Dictatorship.”

The film was a critical and commercial success, earning seven Ariel Awards (the Mexican equivalent of the Oscars) and being nominated for four more. It was also nominated for a Goya Award (the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars) and was selected as Mexico’s official entry for the Academy Awards.

Manolo followed up his success with “We Are What We Are” in 2010, a critically acclaimed horror film that earned him a second Ariel Award and a second Goya Award nomination. The film was also nominated for a Saturn Award and was selected as Mexico’s official entry for the Academy Awards.

Manolo has continued to work on feature films, including 2013’s “The Night of the Sunflowers” and 2016’s “The Collection.” He has also directed several television series, including the award-winning “Capadocia” and “Hijos de la Tierra.”
