BIO

Luis Trenker (1892-1990) was a German mountaineer, explorer, film director, author, and actor. He was born in the small village of Urtijei in South Tyrol, which is now part of Italy. He was the son of a farmer and grew up with a love of the mountains. He began climbing at an early age, and his expeditions soon took him to the Alps and beyond.

Trenker was an accomplished mountaineer, making the first ascent of the Ortler, the highest peak in the Eastern Alps. He wrote extensively about his climbing experiences, publishing his first book in 1925. His experiences climbing in the Alps also inspired his first film, Der Berg ruft (The Call of the Mountains) in 1930.

Trenker’s films were distinguished by their romantic view of the mountains and their celebration of the spirit of adventure. He wrote, directed, and starred in such classics as Der verlorene Sohn (The Prodigal Son, 1934), Der Rebell (The Rebel, 1936), and Berge in Flammen (Mountains in Flames, 1940). He also produced Der Rebell in 1956, which was an homage to his earlier work.

Trenker’s films were also noted for their attention to historical accuracy. He was a passionate researcher, travelling to the locations of his films and studying the details of the time period. He was especially noted for his recreation of the Tyrol region of the 19th century in Der Rebell.

Trenker’s career spanned six decades. He continued to write and direct films until the late 1970s, and he acted until the mid-1980s. After his retirement, he remained a popular figure in the German-speaking world, and his films have been widely shown in Europe.

Trenker was also an accomplished author. He wrote several books, including Der Berg ruft (The Call of the Mountains, 1957), which detailed his mountaineering exploits. He was also a committed environmentalist, founding the Luis Trenker Foundation for Nature and Environment in 1985.

Luis Trenker was an influential figure in German-language popular culture. His films and books were influential in introducing the spirit of mountaineering and exploration to a wider audience, and his films remain popular to this day. He died in 1990, at the age of 97, leaving behind a legacy of adventure and exploration.
