BIO

Janet Tobias is an award-winning director, producer and writer of documentary films and television programs. She is known for her work on documentaries such as "No Place on Earth," "The Great Invisible," and "A Life Unexpected."

Tobias began her career in television as an assistant editor. She then moved up to become a producer and director, and in 1996, she founded her own production company, Storyline Entertainment. She has since produced and directed numerous documentaries, many of which have been nominated for or won prestigious awards.

Her first feature-length documentary, "No Place on Earth," was released in 2013 and told the story of five Jewish families who took refuge in a Ukrainian cave during World War II. The film won numerous awards, including Best Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival.

In 2014, Tobias released "The Great Invisible," a documentary about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary feature and won a Peabody Award. In 2015, she released "A Life Unexpected," a documentary about a family struggling with the effects of a rare genetic disorder. The film won numerous awards, including Best Documentary at the SXSW Film Festival.

Tobias has also directed several television programs, including "Frontline," "The New York Times Presents," and "American Experience." She is currently working on a series of documentaries about the opioid crisis for Netflix.

Tobias has been honored with numerous awards, including the Directors Guild of America's Outstanding Directorial Achievement Award and the International Documentary Association's Courage Under Fire Award. She was also the recipient of the International Documentary Association's inaugural Visionary Award.
