BIO

Giuseppe Tornatore is an Italian film director, screenwriter and cinematographer. Born in Sicily, Italy in 1956, Tornatore grew up in a working-class environment and aspired to make films from an early age.

Tornatore studied film direction and cinematography at the National Film School of Rome. He worked as an assistant director for several years before directing his first short film in 1982, La scorta (The Escort). The film was awarded the Silver Ribbon for Best Short Film at the Venice Film Festival.

Tornatore’s career breakthrough came in 1988 with the release of Cinema Paradiso, a romantic drama set in a small Sicilian village. The film was a huge success, winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and numerous other international awards.

Tornatore continued to make critically acclaimed films in the following years, including Malena (2000), Baarìa (2009) and The Best Offer (2013). His films often feature strong female protagonists, and he often employs his own Sicilian background as a source of inspiration.

In addition to his work as a film director, Tornatore has also worked as a screenwriter, cinematographer and composer. He has been awarded many international awards, including the David di Donatello, the Golden Globe and the Italian Golden Globe.
