BIO

Gabriel Mascaro is a visual artist and filmmaker from Recife in Brazil. His work is marked by a critical approach to contemporaneity and by an investigation into relations between micropolitics and everyday life. He explores these ideas through film, installation and photography. His practice often focuses on minimalist narratives and self fictions, using strategies of narrative re appropriation and perspective inversion.

His films and video installations have been presented at major festivals and artistic events including Venice, IDFA, Locarno, Toronto, Rotterdam, MoMA in New York, Oberhausen, Clermont Ferrand, the Guggenheim, MACBA in Barcelona, Panorama da Arte Brasileira at MAM in São Paulo and the São Paulo Art Biennale. Mascaro has participated in the Videobrasil Artistic Residency at Videoformes in France and at the Wexner Center for Arts in the United States. As a screenwriter he has received support from the Hubert Bals Fund in the Netherlands and from Cinereach in the United States. His films have received more than fifty awards and in April 2016 he had a retrospective of his work at the Lincoln Center in New York.
