BIO

Christian Frei (born 1955) is a Swiss documentary filmmaker, director, and producer. He is best known for his critically acclaimed documentaries War Photographer (2001) and Space Tourists (2009).

Frei was born in Switzerland in 1955. He studied broadcast journalism at the University of Zurich and began his career as a journalist in the 1980s. He made his first documentary in 1989 and since then has gone on to make several documentaries, many of which have won awards.

His 2001 documentary War Photographer, a portrait of war photographer James Nachtwey, was nominated for an Academy Award and won numerous awards, including the Grand Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2005, Frei directed The Giant Buddhas, a documentary about the destruction of two giant statues in Afghanistan by the Taliban. The film won the World Cinema Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Emmy Award.

Frei’s 2009 documentary Space Tourists followed the story of a group of wealthy space tourists traveling to the International Space Station. The film won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award.

Frei’s other films include The Wild Blue Yonder (2005), a science-fiction film about a stranded alien, and The Nuclear Comeback (2011), a documentary about the resurrection of the nuclear energy industry. Frei also directed Rubble Kings (2015), a documentary about gang culture in the Bronx.

Frei has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2008, he was awarded the Filmmaker on the Edge Award at the Provincetown International Film Festival and the Swiss Film Prize for Best Documentary. He has also been the recipient of the Cinema for Peace Awards and the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Kunstpreis.
