BIO

Anna Broinowski is an award-winning Australian documentary filmmaker, writer and environmental activist. She is best known for her feature documentary Aim High in Creation (2012), which follows her mission to North Korea to learn the secrets of its propaganda filmmaking.

Anna was born in Sydney, Australia in 1975. She studied at the University of Technology Sydney, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communications in 1998. After working in television for several years, Anna decided to pursue a career in documentary filmmaking. She received her MA in Documentary from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2008.

Anna's first feature documentary, Aim High in Creation, was released in 2012. The film follows Anna as she travels to North Korea to learn how to make propaganda films. While there, she works with a North Korean film crew to make a short film about the country’s leader, Kim Jong-il. Aim High in Creation was an official selection in numerous film festivals and won a number of awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

Anna has also written and directed a number of short films, including The Herd (2015) and The Perfect Human (2016). Her most recent film, The Search for Weng Weng (2018), follows her quest to uncover the truth behind the Filipino cult film star, Weng Weng. The film premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival and won the Best Documentary Award at the Sydney Underground Film Festival.

In addition to her filmmaking career, Anna is an environmental activist. She is a member of the Australian Conservation Foundation and is an avid advocate for renewable energy and sustainable development. She has also written for publications such as The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
