Amina Maher is a prominent documentary filmmaker known for her compelling storytelling and ability to illuminate complex social issues through the lens of her camera. Born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1985, Amina grew up in a culturally rich environment that sparked her interest in the arts from a young age. Her parents, both educators, encouraged her to explore her creativity, leading her to pursue a degree in filmmaking at the American University in Cairo.

After graduating in 2007, Amina moved to the United States to further her studies, earning a Master’s degree in Documentary Filmmaking from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. It was during her time in New York that she developed a passion for capturing the stories of marginalized communities. Her early works focused on the struggles of immigrant families in urban settings, showcasing their resilience and the challenges they faced in adapting to a new culture.

Amina's breakout film, "Voices of the Forgotten," premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2012. The documentary explored the lives of elderly immigrants living in New York City, weaving together their personal histories with broader themes of loss and belonging. The film received critical acclaim and won several awards, establishing Amina as a rising star in the documentary film circuit.
