Alexandru Solomon is a Romanian filmmaker, producer, and director known for his work in documentary and feature films. He was born in Bucharest in 1975 and is considered one of Romania’s leading filmmakers.
Solomon began his career in film in 1999 with the documentary “The Paper Will Be Blue”, which won several awards, including the Grand Prix at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam. He went on to make several more documentaries, such as “The Great Communist Bank Robbery” (2005), “The Way I Spent the End of the World” (2006), and “Closer to the Moon” (2013).
In 2008, Solomon released his first feature film, “If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle”, which was well-received by critics and won numerous awards, including the Silver Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival. The film tells the story of Silviu, a juvenile delinquent who is desperate to reunite with his mother before being transferred to an adult prison.
In 2013, Solomon directed the feature film “Morgen”, which tells the story of a young Romanian Jewish couple who emigrate to Germany in the 1930s. The film was nominated for multiple awards, including at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Solomon has also directed several commercials and short films, including “Tales from the Golden Age” (2009) and “Vlad” (2018).
In addition to his work in film, Solomon has also worked as a professor at the National University of Film and Theater in Bucharest. He has also served as a jury member for several international film festivals, including the Berlin International Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, and the Warsaw International Film Festival.
