A murder case that challenges truth, justice, and loyalty

On a warm summer night in Virginia in 1995, three promising young people got into a car. By the end of the evening, only two would escape alive, and their lives would be permanently altered. The death of Jennifer Evans became a case that shocked a community and led to the conviction of former US Navy SEAL Dustin Turner.

In Target of Opportunity: The US Navy SEALs and the Murder of Jennifer Evans, former Navy Chief and SpecWar operator JD Leete turns filmmaker to re examine the events surrounding the crime. As his first project after retiring from the Navy, the documentary explores the finer details of the investigation and trial. Leete revisits the questions that shaped the case at the time, including motive, opportunity, and the means of committing the alleged abduction.

Central to the film is the testimony of Billy Brown, described as a deeply troubled figure whose statements played a decisive role in the conviction. The documentary asks whether prosecutors relied too heavily on Brown’s account and whether Turner was convicted for an abduction that may not have occurred as described. Through interviews, documents, and personal reflection, Leete follows the trail of evidence and uncertainty, confronting the complexities of loyalty, justice, and truth within the context of the US Navy SEALs and the murder of Jennifer Evans.
