Zhang Yimou is an influential Chinese filmmaker, screenwriter and producer whose works have been praised for their stunning visuals and sensitive portrayals of Chinese culture. He is best known for directing films such as Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and Curse of the Golden Flower.

Zhang was born in 1951 in Xi'an, China. He grew up in a family of artists, with his mother being a traditional Chinese opera singer and his father a tailor. From an early age, Zhang was drawn to the arts, and he began studying traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy at the age of ten. He also had an interest in music, and was a part of a music group in his teens.

In 1971, Zhang enrolled in the Beijing Film Academy, where he studied cinematography. After graduating in 1977, he worked as a cinematographer for a number of films. In 1984, he directed his first feature film, Red Sorghum. The film was a great success, and won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

Following the success of Red Sorghum, Zhang was able to direct larger-scale projects, such as Raise the Red Lantern (1991) and The Story of Qui Ju (1992). Both films were critically acclaimed, and Zhang became one of the leading figures of the fifth generation of Chinese filmmakers.

In the 2000s, Zhang turned his attention to the wuxia genre, directing films such as Hero (2002) and House of Flying Daggers (2004). Both films were massive international successes, and received numerous awards. In 2006, Zhang directed Curse of the Golden Flower, which was his biggest project to date. The film was highly acclaimed, and was nominated for an Academy Award.

In recent years, Zhang has shifted his focus to directing television series, such as The Great Wall (2016) and Coming Home (2018). He has also begun producing films, including the romantic drama, The Flowers of War (2011).

Over the course of his career, Zhang has had a major influence on Chinese cinema. His films have been praised for their breathtaking visuals and sensitive portrayals of Chinese culture. He has received numerous awards, including the Berlin Film Festival Golden Bear, and his works have been widely screened around the world.
