Ville Lipiäinen is a Finnish film director and screenwriter. He was born in Tampere, Finland in 1974. He studied film production at the University of Tampere and graduated in 2000.
Lipiäinen has written and directed several short and feature-length films. His debut feature, Eight Deadly Shots (2002), was selected for the Cannes Film Festival. The film won several awards, including Best Director at the Jussi Awards, the Finnish equivalent of the Academy Awards.
In 2005, Lipiäinen directed the comedy-drama Frozen Land, which was nominated for six Jussi Awards, including Best Film and Best Director. It went on to become one of the highest-grossing Finnish films of all time.
In 2008, Lipiäinen wrote and directed the sci-fi thriller Iron Sky, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. The film was a major hit, grossing over $10 million worldwide. It also earned Lipiäinen a nomination for Best Director at the European Film Awards.
Lipiäinen has continued to work in the film industry, directing a number of television series and films. He directed the critically acclaimed TV series Bordertown (2016-2017) and the feature film Dogs Don’t Wear Pants (2019). The latter earned Lipiäinen Best Director at the Jussi Awards, making him the first director to win the award twice.
Lipiäinen’s films are known for their unique style, which blends dark humour with social commentary. His body of work has earned him international acclaim, and he has become one of the most respected directors in Finland.
