Verena Paravel is an Austrian-born filmmaker whose work has been featured in several major film festivals around the world. She is best known for her documentary films, which explore the relationship between humans and animals. Her films often focus on the cultural and political implications of our interactions with animals, and she has received multiple awards for her work.

Paravel was born in Vienna, Austria in 1985. She went on to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and earned a degree in film directing. After graduating, she worked as an independent filmmaker, focusing on documentary films.

Paravel’s first feature-length documentary, Bestiarium, was released in 2009 and featured a selection of animal-related stories from around the world. Her second feature-length documentary, Leviathan, was released in 2012. The film focused on the commercial fishing industry and its effects on marine life.

In 2014, Paravel released her third feature-length documentary, Somniloquies. The film explored the dream lives of animals, and featured footage of animals sleeping in various environments. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In 2016, Paravel released her fourth feature-length documentary, Manakamana. The film focused on the rituals and beliefs associated with a cable car ride to the Manakamana Temple in Nepal. The film was an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival.

Paravel’s fifth feature-length documentary, A Magical Substance Flows Into Me, was released in 2018. The film explored the relationship between music and culture through interviews with musicians from the Middle East. The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it received a Golden Bear Award.

Paravel’s latest project is a documentary feature about the history of the Internet. The film is set to be released in 2021.
