BIO

Varja Močnik is a Slovenian filmmaker, producer, screenwriter, and director. She has been producing and directing feature films since the mid-1980s and has been credited with pioneering the independent film movement in Slovenia.

Born in 1961 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Močnik studied film directing at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana. After graduating in 1986, she went on to direct and produce her first feature film, The Man Who Threw Away His Shadow (1987). This was followed by the feature-length documentary A Long, Long Journey (1990), which was nominated for a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

Throughout the 1990s, Močnik directed and produced a number of feature films, including the award-winning The Middle of the World (1995) and The Wolf’s Dream (1997).

In 2000, Močnik wrote and directed the feature film A Stranger in the City, which won the Grand Prix at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam. In 2003, she directed the feature film The Uninvited, which earned her a Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

In addition to her feature films, Močnik has also directed a number of short films, documentaries, and television projects. In recent years, she has directed several episodes of the popular Slovenian TV series Divja V srcu (Wild at Heart).

Močnik is an active member of the Slovenian film industry and has served on the boards of various film organizations, including the Slovenian Film Fund. She is also a member of the European Film Academy and the International Association of Women in Film and Television.

Močnik’s films have been screened and awarded at a number of international film festivals, including Cannes, Venice, Berlin, and Rotterdam. Her work has been praised for its strong visual style and unique approach to storytelling.
