Ulrich Voigt is a German director and screenwriter best known for his films “The Wave” and “Hinterland.” Born in East Berlin in 1973, Voigt grew up in a creative and intellectual family. He attended the prestigious Berlin Film Academy, where he studied under the renowned film director Volker Schlöndorff, and graduated with a degree in directing in 1997.
After graduation, Voigt worked on several film projects before his big break came in 2004 with the release of his debut feature film, “The Wave.” Based on a true story, “The Wave” follows a group of high school students who become involved in an experiment meant to explore the dynamics of group mentality and conformity. The film was praised by critics for its gripping story and powerful visuals, and went on to win several awards, including the German Film Award for Best Feature Film.
In 2009, Voigt released his second feature film, “Hinterland.” Set in a small German town, “Hinterland” tells the story of three childhood friends who are reunited after a long period of separation. The film revolves around the complex relationships between the three friends and the struggles they face in their lives. “Hinterland” was a critical and commercial success, and was nominated for several awards, including the German Film Award for Best Feature Film.
Since then, Voigt has gone on to direct several other films, including “The Silent Mountain” (2011), “The Last Train” (2012), and “The Summer of Sangaile” (2015). He has also written and directed several short films and television series.
