Tyler, The Creator is a rapper, record producer, singer, songwriter, music video director, and fashion designer from California. He is best known as the leader of the alternative hip-hop collective Odd Future, and for his solo albums Goblin and Wolf.
Tyler, The Creator was born Tyler Gregory Okonma on March 6, 1991 in Ladera Heights, California. He was raised by his single mother in the Los Angeles suburb of Hawthorne. Tyler attended twelve different schools throughout his childhood, and was expelled from eight of them. Tyler cites his expulsion from the 12th school as the catalyst for his rap career, as he began to focus on music full-time.
In 2007, Tyler created the Odd Future collective as a way to bring together his friends with similar interests in music and art. The group rose to fame with their debut album The OF Tape Vol. 2, which featured their single “Yonkers”. The success of the single led to Tyler’s first solo album Goblin, which was released in 2011. The album was met with critical acclaim, and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
In 2013, Tyler released his second album Wolf. The album featured the single “Domo23”, which peaked at number 69 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Tyler also produced the album Cherry Bomb, which was released in 2015. The album was praised for its experimentation with different genres, and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.
In addition to his music career, Tyler has also directed several music videos, including the video for “Yonkers” and the video for “Domo23”. He has also designed several clothing lines, including his Golf Wang and GOLF le FLEUR* collections. Tyler was also featured in the documentary series “Glow Up”, which followed the lives of young creatives in the fashion industry.
