Tatiana Issa is a multi-hyphenate Brazilian filmmaker who has made her mark in the film industry. She is a director, screenwriter, producer, and editor. Issa has directed several award-winning short and feature films, as well as documentaries.
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1978, Issa grew up watching classic films from around the world. She was especially drawn to French New Wave films, which inspired her to pursue a career in film. Issa studied at the Faculty of Communication at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where she focused on documentary filmmaking.
After graduating from university, Issa worked as an assistant director on several short and feature films. She then traveled to the United States, where she studied film production and screenwriting at UCLA. While in Los Angeles, she wrote and directed two short films, “Torn” and “The Cave", both of which were critically acclaimed.
In 2011, Issa wrote and directed her first feature film, “The Narrow Frame of Midnight”. The film was an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival, and won numerous awards, including Best International Feature Film at the Cairo International Film Festival.
In 2014, Issa wrote and directed the feature film “The Tree and the Swing”, which won the Grand Prize at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival. In 2016, she directed “The Second Mother”, which was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Today, Issa continues to write and direct films with a focus on social issues. Her films have been screened at festivals around the world, and she has received numerous awards for her work. Issa is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and is a frequent speaker at film festivals and conferences.
