Tai Kato is a Japanese filmmaker who has been creating innovative and award-winning films since the late 1990s. He is best known for his films Tokyo Sonata (2008) and R100 (2013). He also wrote and directed the films The Grand Prix (1998), Butterfly Dreaming (2000), and Village of Dreams (2005).

Kato was born in Fukuoka, Japan in 1964. He studied film at Tokyo University of the Arts, and later attended the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. After graduating, Kato began his career as an assistant director at Shochiku, a major Japanese film studio. He then worked as a director at the small independent film company, Art Theatre Guild.

Kato's first feature film, The Grand Prix, was released in 1998. It told the story of a young racer who competes in a dangerous race in order to save his family. The film received critical acclaim and won several awards in Japan.

Kato's second feature film, Butterfly Dreaming, was released in 2000. It was a drama about a young boy's journey to find his long-lost father. It was well-received by critics and won several awards.

Kato's third feature, Village of Dreams, was released in 2005. It was a drama about a small rural village in Japan and the struggles of its inhabitants. It was the winner of the Best Picture Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
