Semih Kaplanoğlu is a renowned Turkish filmmaker and screenwriter. Born in Istanbul in 1959, Kaplanoğlu grew up in a family of intellectuals. His father was a renowned professor of philosophy, and his mother was an aspiring artist. Kaplanoğlu was exposed to art and culture from an early age, and was encouraged by his parents to pursue his creative interests.

Kaplanoğlu attended Robert College in Istanbul and subsequently graduated from the Istanbul University’s School of Journalism. He then moved to the United States to pursue a Master’s degree in film from the University of Southern California. After finishing his studies, Kaplanoğlu returned to Turkey and began his career in the film industry.

Kaplanoğlu’s debut feature film, Yumurta (2007), was a critical and commercial success. The film was awarded the Golden Tulip at the Istanbul International Film Festival, and went on to be nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Kaplanoğlu followed up his success with Bal (Honey) in 2010, which was awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film was also nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Kaplanoğlu’s third feature film, Arınma Günleri (2012), won the Jury Prize at the Istanbul International Film Festival.

Kaplanoğlu’s subsequent films have continued to receive critical acclaim, and he has become one of the most celebrated filmmakers in Turkey. His films have been screened at film festivals around the world, and have won numerous awards.

In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Kaplanoğlu has also been involved in various humanitarian initiatives. He has been a vocal advocate for human rights, and has provided funding and support for projects in Turkey and abroad.
