BIO

Romuald Karmakar is an award-winning German director, screenwriter and producer. Born in Berlin in 1956, he studied film at the University of Television and Film Munich and went on to direct and produce several critically acclaimed documentaries and feature films. Karmakar’s films often explore the darker aspects of modern life, such as drug addiction, prostitution and homelessness. He has also been known to delve into the political and social issues of the time, such as Germany’s reunification in the 1990s.

Karmakar’s first feature film, The Deathmaker, was released in 1995 and was a critical success. The story follows a young man from a poor family in East Germany who gets involved in the drug trade. The film was nominated for several awards and won the German Film Award for Best Director.

Karmakar’s second feature film, Requiem, was released in 1997 and follows a young female prostitute in East Berlin. The film was a hit with critics and won the German Film Award for Best Film. Karmakar’s next feature, The Legend of Rita, released in 2000, was an even bigger success. Starring Bibiana Beglau and Martin Wuttke, the story follows a left-wing terrorist on the run from the police. In addition to his feature films, Karmakar has also directed several documentaries. His most notable documentary is the 2002 film Der Totmacher, which examines the life of a serial killer in Germany. The film was a critical success and won several awards, including the German Film Award for Best Documentary.

Karmakar’s latest feature film, The City Below, was released in 2010 and follows a group of young people living in Berlin. The film was well-received by critics and won the German Film Award for Best Picture.
