BIO

Rob Coldstream is a British television director and producer best known for his work on the BBC natural history documentary series Planet Earth II, Blue Planet II, Life Story, and The Hunt. He has also directed episodes of the ITV drama series Cold Feet and the ITV factual series The Coroner.

Coldstream began his career in television in the late 1980s as a production assistant for the BBC Natural History Unit, where he worked on the renowned series The Living Planet. He went on to direct his first film, The Mystery of the Thylacine, in 1994. This was followed by a number of documentaries for the BBC, including The Natural World, Nature’s Great Events, and Wild Africa.

In 2001, Coldstream was selected as the director of the BBC’s first major natural history series in over a decade, Planet Earth. The series was an international success, winning multiple awards and becoming the first natural history series to be broadcast in high definition. Coldstream also directed the follow-up series Planet Earth II, which was broadcast in 2016.

In the following years, Coldstream directed a number of other natural history programmes for the BBC, including Life Story, The Hunt, and Blue Planet II. He also directed episodes of the ITV drama series Cold Feet and the ITV factual series The Coroner.

Coldstream’s work has earned him a number of awards and accolades, including a BAFTA and an Emmy for Planet Earth II. In 2017, he was presented with a special award at the Wildscreen Panda Awards in recognition of his outstanding contribution to natural history filmmaking.
