Richard Friedenberg is an American screenwriter, director, and producer. He is best known for his work on the television movie, A River Runs Through It, for which he won an Emmy Award.
Friedenberg was born in 1945 and raised in New Jersey. He attended Brandeis University, majoring in theater, and then went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles. After graduating, Friedenberg moved to Hollywood to pursue a career in film and television.
Friedenberg's first film was the documentary, American Strongholds, released in 1973. He then went on to direct the movie version of A River Runs Through It, which was released in 1992. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning seven Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture. Friedenberg won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie, or Special.
Friedenberg has gone on to direct and produce various films and television shows, including the television movie, The Executioner's Song and the science-fiction miniseries, Earth 2. He also wrote the screenplay for the movie, The War at Home, starring Emilio Estevez.
In addition to his work in film and television, Friedenberg has been involved with various theater projects. He wrote the book and lyrics for the musical, “Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean,” which was adapted into a movie in 1982.
Friedenberg has been involved in numerous other film projects, such as the movie, The Majestic, starring Jim Carrey, and the television movie, My Louisiana Sky, which he wrote and produced. He also wrote the screenplay for the movie, The Contender, starring Jeff Bridges.
Friedenberg has received numerous awards for his work, including the Emmy Award, the Writers Guild of America Award, and the Humanitas Prize. He has also been nominated for a BAFTA Award and an Academy Award.
