Saumyananda Sahi is an Indian film director, screenwriter and film producer who has made some of the most acclaimed and successful films in the country. He is known for his realistic and naturalistic approach to filmmaking and his ability to capture a story and tell it in a way that engages the audience.
Born in 1978 in Kolkata, India, Sahi was brought up in a middle-class family. He was exposed to art and culture from a young age, frequenting theaters and art galleries, and was inspired by the works of renowned filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen.
Sahi studied at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, where he completed his diploma in filmmaking. After graduating in 2002, he worked as an assistant director for several films, such as ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ (2003) and ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’ (2005).
In 2006, Sahi made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed film ‘A Wednesday’, which depicted the events of a single day in the life of a retired police officer. The film was a commercial success and earned Sahi multiple awards including the National Film Award for Best Direction.
In 2008, Sahi directed ‘Tahaan’, a coming-of-age drama set in Kashmir that tells the story of an eight-year-old boy's journey to bring medicine to his ailing grandfather. The film was praised for its realistic and sensitive portrayal of the Kashmir conflict and earned Sahi numerous awards.
In 2011, Sahi directed the romantic drama ‘No One Killed Jessica’, which tells the story of the investigation and struggle for justice in the Jessica Lal murder case. The film was a commercial success and earned Sahi multiple awards.
Sahi’s latest directorial venture is ‘Manto’ (2018), a biographical drama about celebrated Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto. The film was a critical success and was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
