Nigel Algar is an English film and television director. He has directed numerous films and television shows, including the critically acclaimed feature film, The Hours and Times, which won him the Best Director prize at the 1993 British Independent Film Awards.

Algar was born in London, England in 1965. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and graduated in 1988. After graduating, he worked as an assistant director for the BBC and directed his first short film, No Place to Hide, for Granada Television. He then worked as a director for the BBC for several years, directing episodes of dramas such as The Bill, EastEnders and Casualty, as well as the documentary series, The Human Story.

In 1993, Algar wrote and directed his first feature film, The Hours and Times. The film, which starred Ian Hart and David Angus, tells the story of a fictitious weekend in 1963 between John Lennon and his then manager, Brian Epstein. The film was a critical success, winning several awards, including the Best Director prize at the 1993 British Independent Film Awards.

Algar then went on to direct a number of other films, including the British-American drama, The Governess (1998), the romantic comedy, An Ideal Husband (1999), and the thriller, The Man Who Knew Too Little (2002). He also directed the television miniseries, Emma (2009), which was based on Jane Austen’s novel of the same name.

In more recent years, Algar has continued to direct both television and film projects, including the television series, The Frankenstein Chronicles (2015-17), as well as the feature films, The Limehouse Golem (2017) and The Mercy (2018).

Algar is known for his ability to bring characters to life on the screen and for his focus on strong, complex female characters. His films often explore themes of love and loss and his work has been praised for its visual style and dramatic intensity.

Throughout his career, Algar has been recognized with numerous awards and nominations, including the Best Director prize at the British Independent Film Awards and a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television. He is an accomplished and highly respected film and television director who has created a great many memorable characters and stories.
