Nelson Carlo de Los Santos Arias is an outstanding Dominican filmmaker, producer and director. He is the founder of Caramelo Films production company and is regarded as one of the most successful filmmakers in the Dominican Republic.
Nelson was born in San Francisco de Macorís, Dominican Republic in 1981. He studied communications at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Santo Domingo, where he specialized in scriptwriting. After graduating, he worked in various television networks as a producer and screenwriter.
In 2009, Nelson released his first feature film, “La Soga”, which was critically acclaimed and won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix at the Festival de Cine de Cartagena de Indias in Colombia. This success led him to receive the “Premio Nacional de Cine” in 2010, the most important award for a Dominican filmmaker.
In 2012, Nelson released his second feature film “Jaque Mate”, which was again well received and won several awards. His third feature film “Sand Dollar” was released in 2014 and was the Dominican Republic's entry for the 88th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
Nelson has also directed several short films and documentaries, such as “La Lucha” (2017) and “La Danza de los Paraísos” (2018), which were both awarded at the BAFICI. He has also directed several television series, such as “La Mujer de Esta Noche” (2016) and “La Vida de Mariposa” (2018).
Nelson is a multi-talented filmmaker who is well known for his ability to tell inspiring stories with a unique visual style. He is credited for bringing Dominican cinema to the international spotlight and has been praised for his dedication to the craft.
