Muriel Balash is an award-winning film director from Brooklyn, New York. She is best known for her short films and documentaries, as well as her feature-length debut, "Home is Where the Heart Is".
Balash grew up in Brooklyn and attended school at LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. It was here that she developed her love of film and filmmaking. After graduation, she attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she earned her BFA in Film/Video.
In 2008, Balash wrote, directed, and produced her first short film, "Uncle Tito", which was selected to screen at film festivals around the world, including the Sundance Film Festival. The film won the Audience Award at the Brooklyn International Film Festival and was featured in the New York Times.
In 2012, Balash released her first feature-length film, "Home is Where the Heart Is". The film tells the story of a young woman's journey to reconnect with her estranged family. It was an official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Los Angeles Film Festival.
In 2014, Balash directed the short documentary "The Journey of a Lifetime". This film follows the story of a young woman in search of a better life for herself and her family in the United States. It was selected to screen at numerous film festivals and won the Audience Award at the Traverse City Film Festival.
In addition to her work in film, Balash is actively involved in the Brooklyn community. She serves as a mentor for young filmmakers and is a board member of the Brooklyn Arts Council.
